As shared in last week’s Jaguar Jiggy Journal by our assistant principal, Diane Secord, schools are required to practice a number of safety drills each year. Practicing our lockdown procedures is one of those required drills, and we conduct them regularly to ensure we are well prepared. We are required to have two drills for lockdowns within the first month of school and four during the entire school year. Kindergarten and preschool do not take part in the first two drills but will be a part of the drills later in the year.
Today our school participated in our first lockdown drill. The kids did great! During a lockdown the doors are locked, the lights are turned off, and everyone stays quiet and out of sight. We were joined by Bridgewater Police Chief Phillip Read, Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department School Resource Officer Deputy Trea Irvine, and Rockingham County Public Schools Director of Safety & Security Caleb Bailey. They observed our procedures, monitored the drill, and provided helpful feedback to ensure that we continue to keep safety a top priority. We are grateful for the strong partnership between our school, local law enforcement, and the district.
These drills are an important way for us to practice and prepare, and they are always conducted with the well-being of our students in mind. If you have any questions about anything we are doing to keep the kids safe please don’t hesitate to call. As always, thank you for your continued support as we work together to keep John Wayland Elementary a safe place to learn and grow.
