Principal Message

Greetings John Wayland Families,

As we settle into the late fall season, this edition of Jaguar Jiggy's Journal is packed with helpful updates to keep your family informed and ready for the weeks ahead. Inside, you’ll find friendly reminders about our morning drop-off routine—simple steps that help keep the process safe, smooth, quick, and easy for everyone. We’ve also outlined the calendar for the next few months, which includes several upcoming holiday breaks so you can plan ahead with confidence.

With winter weather on the horizon, this newsletter also shares how snow-day decisions are made and the best ways to stay updated when weather impacts the school schedule. You’ll find details about our upcoming Turkey Trot for both adults and kids, along with this month’s “Teacher Feature” and important news from our PTO.

We hope this edition helps you feel connected and prepared as we head into a busy and festive stretch of the school year.

Morning Drop-Off Reminders

We love seeing our Jaguars arrive each morning, ready to learn and shine!  If you drive your child to school in the morning, please keep a few things in mind that will help keep the line moving and keep everyone safe.

Stay in your vehicle. Our staff are happy to help your child safely out of the car.

Have your child unload on the school-side of your vehicle.  This avoids students and/or staff crossing in front of any cars when entering the school.

The first three cars may unload at the same time.  This keeps traffic flowing and helps everyone get to class on time.

If you park in the lot to assist your child, please walk with them to the crosswalk for safety.  We often have the support of a Bridgewater police officer to help with the crosswalk, but if they are not there please walk your child across the street.

Be here before 8:15.  Our first bell rings at 8:15, and our morning traffic staff need to get inside at that time to start teaching.  Keep in mind that it can take up to 5 minutes to get to the unloading zone after entering our parking lot.

Thank you for helping us keep arrival time calm, safe, and efficient for everyone!

Holiday Schedule

The next couple of months have a number of breaks from school that we want you to be aware of.

November 26-28: Thanksgiving Holiday

December 22-January 2: Winter Break

January 19-20: Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and Teacher Workday

Snow Days...‘Tis the Season for Winter Weather

Icy or snowy mornings, or even the forecast of wintry weather, can create safety concerns for our schools and families in the Shenandoah Valley. Rockingham County Public Schools takes these decisions seriously, especially given the size and varied geography of our county.

Here’s what to know:

Timing of Decisions: We aim to notify families about weather-related delays or closings by 6:15 a.m. Sometimes that means making a decision early in the morning based on the latest conditions and forecasts.

How We Decide: A lot goes into these calls. If you're interested in learning more about how weather decisions are made, we invite you to listen to our podcast episode here: Safety First: The RCPS Approach to Weather-Related Decisions

How You’ll Be Notified: Families will receive alerts by text, phone, and email based on the contact information shared during student registration. Information will also be shared through WHSV, WSVA, RCPS Social Media, and on the "Live Feed" of the JWES website. If your contact information has changed, please reach out to your child’s school to update it. Additional guidance and options for community member sign-ups are available at: https://www.rcps.net/o/rcps/page/notification-sign-up.

As always, our goal is to keep students, staff, and families safe and informed.

Turkey Trot Race

If you're looking for a race but Thanksgiving morning is too hectic, join the Shenandoah Valley Track Club in Bridgewater this Sunday! They are hosting a pre-Thanksgiving 5K and Kids 1 mile race. There are free coupons to Smiley's and DQ for everyone who signs up and lots of great prizes as well!  Click this link to register or show up at Town Hall to register in person on Sunday afternoon.

Teacher Feature: Mrs. Bair, Literacy Specialist

Interviewee- Mrs Bair        Interviewer- Hagan Elkins

What did you want to be when you were younger?

So, I wanted to be a teacher. I would collect old text books or worksheets that my teachers would give me and set up in my basement, and I would set up all my stuffed animals and pretend to do the work and then grade it. So I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, so it’s pretty cool that I got to be one.

What was your favorite subject as a kid and why?

I liked all the subjects. Probably math was the most difficult, so I didn’t like it as much. History was probably my favorite because I like learning about things from long ago and all that happened.

What elementary school did you go to

I went to elementary school in West Virginia.

What did you like to do after school as a kid?

I was picked up by my dad on Mondays because he was off on Mondays. It was the only day I could get picked up. I loved that, and he would take me to the library the other days I had to ride the bus. I also did Brownies for Girlscouts, dance lessons, and baton.

Why did you change to a reading teacher?

We started learning about the science of reading, and it was interesting to me. Then I was able to go back to school to get my masters, and I wanted to try something new. It’s not that I didn't like kindergarten, it’s just that I wanted to do something that went along with my degree.

What is the funniest thing a student has said to you?

So there have been a lot of funny things in my career. I should’ve written a book, but here recently I would have to say when a kid outside said, “Why aren't you a teacher anymore?” I looked at them and said,  “I still am, just a different kind.”

What was your favorite field trip to go on when you taught kindergarten?

I loved taking any trips that were outside like the pumpkin patch, or Brethren Woods, because I like showing the kids real things like nature.

What is the biggest change that you have seen at JWES?

I would say the biggest change for me as a teacher would be that there are so many more meetings that we have to go to than back when I started. This can be helpful because you can talk with the people you work with, but I feel like it can also be hurtful because you lose great time working with kids.

Have you ever worked in a different school than JWES? If so, what did you do?

I have only ever worked here as a job; actually that's not true. Before I got this job I was a long term sub at a school in Augusta County as a first grade teacher.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love working with kids and teaching them, so I like getting to work in small groups because that's so fun to me. Something that I didn't think I’d like that I do is that I like working with all grade levels instead of one. For a while I thought that kindergarten was the best and five-year-olds are awesome, but all kids are awesome no matter what age or grade.
